My Hometown Writing Contest connie

The White River Valley Museum is hosting a writing contest for all junior and senior high school students in Auburn, WA. The first annual “Connie” award pays homage to beloved local author and Museum board member Connie Malesis. Connie’s writings focused on the people and places of his hometown - Auburn.

Theme: “My Hometown”

Prompt: Whether you are originally from Auburn or not, where you live right now influences who you are and where you will go. This essay should be connected to living in Auburn and explain its influence on your personal history and on your future plans.

Some examples/ideas to get you started:

  1. Explain why my hometown will stay in my heart once I leave.
  2. The three best things about living in my town and their influence on me.
  3. Explain why my town is one of the best places to live.
  4. Connections to places and people in the city of Auburn and their influence on me.
  5. The neighborhood I grew up in and the stories and history it kept.
  6. The culture and subculture within Auburn that shaped my life.

Prizes: $250 first place, $100 second place and $50 to third place. First place winner will be featured in the Museum journal and on the Museum website.


  • All entries must be submitted via wrvmuseum.org/hometown by midnight March 25, 2018.
  • All essays/poems/proses must be 500 words or less.
  • Only one submission per student.
  • Students must attend an Auburn high school (public, private or tribal) OR be homeschooled within the Auburn city limits and be in their junior or senior year during the 2017-2018 academic year.
  • All submissions must be the sole and original work of the student.
  • Winners will be announces in mid-April.
