Social reformers who were interested in bettering humanity through science were easily swayed into advocating for eugenics, especially through the forced sterilization of people with “undesirable” physical, mental, or personality traits, including the incarcerated, the mentally ill, disabled people, and queer people. In 1909, Washington became the third state to legalize the forced sterilization of inmates.
