Portrait of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, c. 1893

Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a foremost journalist reporting on issues of women’s and civil rights, as well as co-founder of the Alpha Suffrage Club. Despite her prominence, she was still asked to march “in the back” of the Illinois delegation of the 1913 Women’s March on Washington with other Black women. She refused, marching in the very front instead.
