Some suffragists said women deserved the vote simply for being people. It was a controversial statement in the face of anti-suffrage advocates who claimed “[the woman voter] with her nervous condition and her half logic, the safety valve of society will be lifted and she will drive swiftly to the wreck of both man and woman.”
