#PinkCollar
“What Shall I do With My Girl?” By Jeanette Rankin, 1918
When women did choose to enter the workforce, it was often described as a “service”, even if they were doing waged labor. This conflated women’s paid labor with volunteerism, making it seem like women who worked did so on a whim and not to support their families. This justified paying them less and led to decades of low wages for “pink-collar” jobs.
