The “back-to-nature” movement suggested that urban, industrial life was not “real” enough. By spending time (usually leisure time spent camping or hiking) in wilderness areas, a person could truly find their authentic selves. Like Millennials today, Progressive Era consumers flocked toward activities that were “authentic experiences” rather than just material goods.
