The National Park movement had been brewing since the 1830s, but it wasn’t until naturalist John Muir started writing about the beauty of Yosemite Valley that it gained political momentum. Muir embodied the back-to-nature movement in 1888 when he wrote, “Take a course of good water and air, and in the eternal youth of Nature you may renew your own.”
