The movements for pure food, water, and air were all connected by a general societal unease with the idea of industrial work and the pollution it caused. Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle created such outrage about industrial food production that it sparked the political push that resulted in the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.
